Follow us on Social Media! Below is a teaser as to the joys you’ll uncover.
I hope you're all enjoying our episode about headhunting, hillforts and the British Iron Age. ⠀
⠀
Here's a picture to try and show you what Danebury might have looked like. It's interesting that the roundhouses hugged the ramparts, leaving open space in the centre of the hillfort. What was that space used for? Excarantion? Council Meetings? Law courts? Religious festivals or was it simply empty space to gather in and act as a playground for the young children? ⠀

More aerial shots of Danebury Hillfort because THE NEW EPISODE IS HERE! ⠀
⠀
I listened to it this morning and, I'll be honest with you, I'm really proud of this one. We talk about raids, druids, excarnation and headhunting. There are naked, woad-dyed men, a couple of jabs against history, just a whole load of fun, interesting stuff. ⠀
⠀
The iron age is a great place. Check this episode out. ⠀

Hillforts dominate their landscapes, especially ones like Danebury. It is a single hill, rising up from the plain. There, for 400 years, British celts lived, loved and died. ⠀
⠀
Tomorrow we talk about the 182 burials found within this site. You'll want to subscribe. ⠀

In June 2019, my fiance and I, newly engaged, took a little holiday to Dorset, in England. We stayed in the lovely village of Childe Oakford, at the bottom of Hambledon Hill, one of many ginormous Iron Age hillforts that cover the South of England. Most evenings we packed snacks and drinks and climbed up Hambledon Hills steep banks and, with the cows and butterflies, enjoyed the sunsets and endless views. ⠀
⠀
For weeks before I'd had this idea in the back of my head that I might start a podcast about the past. As we climbed Hambledon Hill's banks, I realised no one had really ever spoken about hillforts in any podcast I'd heard. Whenever I read about them, people always spoke about what they were, but never WHY they were. ⠀
⠀
As we travelled through the South West of England, seeing the Amesbury Archer at Salisbury Museum, or eating chicken pie at Stonehenge, I decided that I was going to return to archaeology with a podcast that seeks to understand not just what humans did, but why they did it. ⠀
⠀
I'm proud to say that, on Friday, I get to return to hillforts. Not Hambledon Hill, but Danebury, a place excavated so thoroughly, it earned the chief archaeologists a knighthood. We're going to talk about why they existed, who used them and what that tells us about human society in the Early and Middle Iron Age. ⠀
⠀
I won't lie... it's a good one. ⠀

Although they were mummified, the humans of Cladh Hallan were buried in sand, which rubbed away their flesh and left them nothing more than a collection of stained bones. ⠀
⠀
However, thanks to incredible science we've been able to learn so much from and about these bodies. Check out our latest episode for more information. ⠀

THE NEW EPISODE IS HERE! ⠀
⠀
This is probably the freakiest one yet: human bodies preserved in peat and then displayed for hundreds of years. Its weird, it is a bit creepy and it tells us a lot about how ancient people lived. ⠀

Everyone ready for a new episode? ⠀
⠀
On Friday we're going back to Scotland, to the blustery Western Isles to talk about some pretty freaky skeletons. They're mummified, they're Frankensteined and they were hundreds of years old when they were finally buried. ⠀
⠀
It's not romantic, but it is awesome. ⠀

Our new episode is live! We're talking about the Amesbury Archer, the King of Stonehenge. When I first started planning Old Bones, the Amesbury Archer was the first name on the sheet, he's a fascinating character, the richest bronze age burial, buried as Stonehenge was reaching its peak. ⠀

Stonehenge is an ancient landscape, one used for religious purposes since 10,000 years ago. Here are a few snapshots of the early landscape showing the Avon valley before the monument was built, the large village at nearby Durrington Walls and a some recreations of the early features of Stonehenge being created: the avenue and the ditch & bank. ⠀

In our latest episode, we discussed Neolithic trade. I wanted to share with you a map explaining where the Pentland Firth was, an image of Whitby, 600 miles south of Orkney where jet is found and a recreation of a Neolithic boat. Travel in these days was so treacherous that the fact it happened at all is incredible.

I've returned to Orkney to talk about late Neolithic society in those northern islands. I thought I'd share some images of the objects found in and around Isbister, the Tomb of the Eagles. Listen to the new episode here: https://buff.ly/2L6ceWl
Image 1 is of female skull, the jet beads and some eagles talons. Image 2 is an assortment of finds from Isbister, including the maceheads at the top of the image. Image 3 shows an Unstan Ware Pot and Image 4 a Grooved Ware Pot.
